Making your private moorings convenient to be picked up

What is the issue?
Picking up moorings can present a challenge, never more so than for the single-hander and anything that makes it safer and easier has to be welcomed.

Why address this?
If you have a private set of moorings that you will be using on a regular basis, it is best to make this as convenient as possible.

How to address this?
Try rigging up a tall or pillar type mooring buoy that stands clear of the water and presents an easy deck level clip-on-hoop.

A tall distinctive mooring buoy will be easy to spot and easy to grab hold of or clip-on to, particularly so if a conspicuous flag is added. Placing the boat name on the flag helps remove any ambiguity with regard to the mooring being private. This should significantly reduce the chances of returning, after a pleasant sail, to find your moorings are occupied by a visiting boat.

From the upper face of a standard cylindrical mooring buoy is a rigid post with an upturned truncated cone top-piece from which the line hangs.

A specific mooring buoy manufacturer is in the USA, known as a Mara Buoy, is specifically designed for this purpose and can be purchased in the UK through an Aberdeen based agent External link.
