Making your private moorings convenient to be picked up

What is the issue?
Picking up a mooring buoy can present a challenge, particularly so if you sail single handed. It involves a lot of dashing back and forth from cockpit to bow and can be tricky in crowded waters. With crew it is equally challenging as it is a prime time to loose a crew member overboard.

Why address this?
If you have a private set of moorings you will be dropping on and off it on a regular basis. It is best to make this as convenient as possible.

How to address this?
Use a tall buoy that stands clear of the water and presents an easy to clip into hoop, see figure 1.

Tall buoys are easy to spot and easy to grab hold of,0- particularly so if a conspicuous flag is added. Placing the boat name on the flag also helps remove the risk of returning after a pleasant sail to find your moorings have been occupied.
