Marking out and cutting a round object such as an oar, boom or mast etc.

Be the first to comment

What is the issue?
Accurately marking out a square line on a round object and then cutting it is not a simple task. It is far more likely to go wrong than right.

Why address this?
With this type of cut, you don’t typically get a second chance and getting it wrong can be prohibitively expensive.

How to address this?
Roll a square sheet of paper around the object. Square it up until it meets evenly then mark off the line to cut.
Saw in with shallow cuts around the line, piece by piece, constantly rotating the object. Cutting down from one side will be unlikely to produce a straight cut.
