Arrows represent the direction of tidal streams with lighter or shorter arrows indicating weaker streams. Stronger streams are indicated by heavier or longer arrows, and as mentioned above, red arrows flagging rates of 3 knots and above. Numerals represent [mean neap, mean spring] rates in tenths of a knot. For example the numbers 12,23 would indicate a mean neap of 1.2 knots and a mean spring of 2.3 knots.

Outside the entrance of Waterford Harbour:
West going stream begins -0100 Dover (+0450 Cobh)
East going stream begins +0515 Dover (-0120 Cobh)
The external spring rate not exceeding 1 knot
When the ebb is setting at maximum strength out of the harbour, a west current begins off Hook Head. The junction of these two currents is well marked by rips that extend toward Swines Head. When the west current attains its maximum strength south of Hook Head, the turbulent ‘Tower Race’ is formed. This condition is exacerbated by opposing winds and becomes very difficult in gales.
Inside the Waterford Harbour estuary:
The flood begins +0210 Dover (-0425 Cobh)
The ebb tide at -0505 Dover (+0045 Cobh)
Spring velocity varies from 2.5 to 3 knots. The flood sets toward the west shore and the ebb toward the east. In the fairway 800 metres southeast of Creadan Head, the streams set approximately north-northeast and south-southwest beginning as follows:
Cobh -0425 in going, +0045 out going
Dover +0210 in going, -0505 out going
In going speeds attain a speed of 0.75kt, outgoing 1.5kt.
Close off Creadan Head, the spring rate in both directions attains a rate of 2.5-3kt.

Dublin Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) VHF Ch 83 covers the area from Carlingford Lough to Youghal. Carlingford (04), Wicklow Head (02), Rosslare (23) and Mine Head (83) provide relay stations. Coastguard Radio is always called on a working channel. Emergencies are worked on 16, 67 and working channel.
