Arrows represent the direction of tidal streams with lighter or shorter arrows indicating weaker streams. Stronger streams are indicated by heavier or longer arrows, and as mentioned above, red arrows flagging rates of 3 knots and above. Numerals represent [mean neap, mean spring] rates in tenths of a knot. For example the numbers 12,23 would indicate a mean neap of 1.2 knots and a mean spring of 2.3 knots.

Valentia Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) VHF Ch 24 & MF 1752 kHz covers this coastal area. Cork (26), Mizen (04), Bantry Bay (23), Shannon (28) and Galway (04) provide relay stations. Coastguard Radio is always called on a working channel. Emergencies are worked on 16, 67 and working channel.

The large scale Admiralty Charts 2424 ‘Kenmare River to Cork Harbour’ Scale of 1:150,000 covers this area. 2129 ‘’Long Island Bay to Castlehaven’’ and 2184 ‘’Mizen Head to Gascanane Sound’’ Scale of 1:30,000 provide detail. Admiralty Chart 3725 Baltimore Harbour (SW Ireland) Scale 1:6250 provides a harbour overview. Finally Admiralty Leisure Folio SC5623 Ireland – ‘South West Coast, Bantry Bay to Kinsale’ is available for this area. sheet 12 covers Long Island Bay, sheet 14 the River Ilen and sheet 13 The Sound; sadly the north end of The Sound, where the starboard turning is required, is not covered on sheet 13.
