As Portsmouth, HW+0029 Dover

The maximum currents are usually experienced on the ebb when spring rates may reach 5.5 knots in the harbour entrance, about 3 hours and 30 minutes after HW. During maximum ebb little headway can be made at the narrows and it is best to avoid arriving at these times.

There is ¾ of an hour slack in the entrance during the second and third hours of the flood. A counter-current runs along the western edge of the channel just inside the entrance on the flood. The direction of the out-going stream in the entrance to the harbour is towards Hamilton Bank and a specific allowance should be made for this dangerous set.

Level of protection

Quality of shelter is characterised from one to five stars and are described below. All levels are selected by default and you can set what is appropriate by checking the minimum star rating level. If you do not set a minimum level all havens that cover the requested quadrants will be presented irrespective of the quality of the shelter provided.
Specifying the minimum level of protection is important as this may vary significantly depending upon what it is needed for and the prevailing conditions. For instance, if conditions are moderate and it is simply needed for a lunch stop, most all locations from one star will be suitable. When looking for a location to stay overnight in comfort it would be more appropriate to select a three star minimum. Or when seeking shelter in rough conditions a minimum of four stars would be best. All of these depend upon what you are personally comfortable with, plus the capabilities of the vessel and crew.

This minimum level of access complexity may vary significantly depending upon the time available, the vessel and skill levels of the crew plus the prevailing conditions. For instance, if conditions are moderate, plus time and experience are plentiful, the one star minimum could be the most suitable option for the adventurous sailor. If conditions are more developed, but the visibility is good, a three star minimum could be the best fit. Or when seeking shelter in heavy weather conditions a four stars access minimum may be best. All of these depend upon what you are personally comfortable with, plus the capabilities of the vessel and crew.

Coastguard on VHF Channel 16 and this should only be used for distress and urgency calls. Most coastal areas have a good phone signal making it possible to dial 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard. HM Coastguards Solent area ‘Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre’ MRCC is situated at Lee-on-Solent; MMSI is 002320011. The centre is manned 24x7 and has a rescue helicopter at its disposal. They keep a watch on VHF Ch 16 and also Ch 67 which can be used for routine communications. Solent Coastguard broadcasts a weather forecast on Ch 86 and Ch 23 once an initial announcement has been made on Ch 16.

Whilst operating in the Solent it is advisable to maintain a radio watch on the port working frequency of Channel 12 used by Southampton Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) and shipping. Every 2 hours from 0610-2210 there will be a broadcast on Channel 14, pre-empted by a transmission on Channel 12, giving information on large ship movements, local weather conditions and any new Navigational Warnings.
