Town Quay Mean Level 1.6 metres
Poole has unusual tides with a very small tidal range, neaps 0.4m; springs 1.5m, with what resembles a HW stand at Neaps and a double HW at Springs. When LW occurs between 0230 and 0830 or 1430 and 2030, HW Springs is about 5hrs after LW, followed by a second lower HW 4hrs later, returning to about LW 3 hours later. When LW occurs between 2030 and 0230 or 0830 and 1430 HW Neaps is just 3hrs 30 minutes before the next LW. The tide then rises abruptly for 4 hours, then gradually for almost three hours giving a stand before peaking abruptly 2 hours later. This is very gradual and scarcely perceptible on neaps as the entire mean range is only 0.4 m.
Sea levels within the harbour can be raised by as much as 0.2 metres when strong east to southwest conditions establish themselves for an extended period. Conversely, established westerly to northeast winds can lower sea levels by 0.1m. Poole Harbour is highly subject to barometric pressure that can alter the heights of tides by as much as 0.3 metres.
Outgoing streams in the entrance to Poole Harbour commence at Dover -0115, attaining a maximum rate of 4.5 kn on Springs. Being subject to Poole Harbour’ HW stand at Neaps and double HWs at Springs that cause the first 3 hours flow to be weak. In-going streams commence at Dover -0600 attaining a maximum rate of 3kn.

The National Maritime Operations Centre (NMOC) based Fareham handles all operations in the area from Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Dorset and Devon. They also assist other authorities such as the Police, Fire and Ambulance with their specialist expertise. The centre is manned 24x7 and has helicopters, based at rescue bases in Portland or Lee-On-Solent, at their disposal.
