Arrows represent the direction of tidal streams with lighter or shorter arrows indicating weaker streams. Stronger streams are indicated by heavier or longer arrows, and as mentioned above, red arrows flagging rates of 3 knots and above. Numerals represent [mean neap, mean spring] rates in tenths of a knot. For example the numbers 12,23 would indicate a mean neap of 1.2 knots and a mean spring of 2.3 knots.

The inshore streams between Straight Point and the west end of Chesil Beach are weak. They run generally in the direction of the coast, HW Dover +0600 Eastbound, HW Dover Westbound, with a maximum spring rate of less than 1 kn. Inshore at West Bay the east-going stream runs south-eastward along the coast, then south on the west side of the Portland peninsula to turn east by south-east to the south of the Bill. A clockwise eddy forms and fills the whole bay during the west-going stream.
Tides in the vicinity of Bill of Portland are strong and a dangerous Race exists south of the Bill. The peninsula disrupts the flow of water in the Channel and the streams are further disrupted by a ledge of Portland stone that extends further out to sea. Added to this are strong south-going streams either side of the Bill, running for 9 or 10 hrs of the tidal cycle, that meet the main Channel streams. All combine to cause the seas to well up and break with the effects of this conflagration being felt up to 5 miles south of Portland Bill.
The Race can be avoided by staying 3 to 5 miles offshore and allowing for a strong set into the race or onto the Shambles. Those planning on visiting Weymouth from the west can make use of an inshore passage which is much faster and shorter. Timing is vital to catch slack water and the right weather conditions in the inshore passage, but it should not be attempted during Springs or at night. There is also a Race off Start Point which extends about a mile to the south-east of the headland. In strong winds, the race off Start Point may be severe for a mile or more to the south-east, and up to 2 miles with strong south-westerly wind-against-tide conditions. In fair weather, there is an inshore passage where less turbulence can be found, but a vigilant watch must be maintained for lobster pots.

The National Maritime Operations Centre (NMOC) based at Fareham handles all operations in the area from Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Dorset and Devon. They also assist other authorities such as the Police, Fire and Ambulance with their specialist expertise. The centre is manned 24x7 and has helicopters, based at rescue bases at Portland or Lee-On-Solent, at their disposal.
