Arrows represent the direction of tidal streams with lighter or shorter arrows indicating weaker streams. Stronger streams are indicated by heavier or longer arrows, and as mentioned above, red arrows flagging rates of 3 knots and above. Numerals represent [mean neap, mean spring] rates in tenths of a knot. For example the numbers 12,23 would indicate a mean neap of 1.2 knots and a mean spring of 2.3 knots.

The flood tide sets in the first instance into White Bay, and then obliquely across to Crosshaven, where it is again bent into a north-easterly direction, producing corresponding counter tides and eddies along both shores. The ebb tide has a directly opposite tendency. The average velocity of the tides does not exceed the rate of 2 knots, but about the Turbot bank and Harbour Rock, and also in the narrows off Monkstown, and in the East Passage they often attain as much as 3 knots.

Rate circa 1.2 kn springs and at Daunt Rock 0.7 kn, springs, 0.4 kn neaps.

Valentia Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) VHF Ch 24 & MF 1752 kHz covers this coastal area. Cork (26), Mizen (04), Bantry Bay (23), Shannon (28) and Galway (04) provide relay stations.
