Arrows represent the direction of tidal streams with lighter or shorter arrows indicating weaker streams. Stronger streams are indicated by heavier or longer arrows, and as mentioned above, red arrows flagging rates of 3 knots and above. Numerals represent [mean neap, mean spring] rates in tenths of a knot. For example the numbers 12,23 would indicate a mean neap of 1.2 knots and a mean spring of 2.3 knots.

The east going flood tide commences at HW Cobh -0605 and the west ebb at HW Cobh +0005. In the vicinity of the Calf Islands, the east tidal current sets toward the entrance of the Ilen River in the east corner of Long Island Bay, at a velocity of about 1 knot. In the sound between Sherkin and the mainland, the flood is north and the ebb is south.
Among the islands of the bay, the flood tends south and then east in this area running east along both the north and south sides of the islands but generally south through sounds. The ebb tends to flow west and north through the sounds. Gascanane Sound, between Sherkin and Cape Clear, is a perfect example of this.
A notable exception to this general trend is that the flood streams north through the sound between Long Island and Castle Island and ebbs southward as it fills and empties Schull Harbour. The large enclosed body of water that makes up Baltimore Harbour fills from both sides, north and south.
