Making secure and easy end joints

What is the issue?
Wood screws tend not to bite securely into an end grain, making it difficult to construct strong end-joints with wood screws alone.

Why address this?
If a secure joint cannot be made with a screw, the job may require a wood joint which will require a significantly higher degree of woodworking capabilities, time and effort.

How to address this?
Drill and place in dowels for the wood screws to bite into as below. This avoids dovetail work which is symbolic of fine woodworking, and although there is simply no stronger or prettier way to join the sides of a solid-wood box, it requires an enormous amount of skill and time. End joints are quick and easy when using screw and dowel.
