Arrows represent the direction of tidal streams with lighter or shorter arrows indicating weaker streams. Stronger streams are indicated by heavier or longer arrows, and as mentioned above, red arrows flagging rates of 3 knots and above. Numerals represent [mean neap, mean spring] rates in tenths of a knot. For example the numbers 12,23 would indicate a mean neap of 1.2 knots and a mean spring of 2.3 knots.

Along the coast between Loop Head and Galway Bay, tidal streams run in the direction of the coast with a Spring Rate of about a knot. Galway -0320 (Dover +0300) NE going, Galway +0305 (Dover -0300) SW going. Offshore currents, at about 6 miles north-northeast of Loop Head, set east and southwest at half a knot. Offshore currents at about eight miles west southwest of Cape Cancregga set north and southwest at a speed of about one third of a knot.

Valentia Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) VHF Ch 24 & MF 1752 kHz covers this coastal area. Cork (26), Mizen (04), Bantry Bay (23), Shannon (28) and Galway (04) provide relay stations. Coastguard Radio is always called on a working channel. Emergencies are worked on 16, 67 and working channel. Alternatively, or if ashore, phone 999 or 112 (free) and ask for ‘Marine Rescue’. Gardai (police), Fire and Rescue are also available on this number. Valentia (MRSC) may be called on +353 669 476 109.
Small scale Admiralty Chart 2173 ‘Loop Head to Slyne Head’ scale 1:150,000 covers this area. Chart 1984 ‘Galway Bay’ Scale 1:29,000 provides more detail. Imray C55 ‘Dingle Bay to Galway Bay’ scale of 1:170,000, covers the west coast from Dingle Bay to Galway Bay and up the Shannon Estuary as far as Limerick City. Ordinance Survey of Ireland, Discovery Series Map No. 51, scale of 1:50,000, covers the land area.
